ANDP Veterans Program: Veteran finds recipe for success

Early relishes the time he spends in his new home with his children and grandchildren. He loves to cook for them – a much smaller task than the thousands of meals a day he prepared in the United States Navy and the United States Military Academy.

Early’s time in the U.S. Navy took him to Vietnam, Philippines, Guam, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. He has fond memories of his service to his country and the brave men and women he served with. But he is most fond of his 30 years as chef to the corps of cadets at West Point – where he prepared 15,000 meals daily.

When asked if he missed cooking for cadets, Early responded, “Every meal is different. You add your own flair and flavor to it – to make it your own.” He could easily have been describing his home too.

The veteran and proud supporter of West Point purchased a newly renovated 3-bedroom, 2-bath through ANDP’s Veterans Home Program in November 2016. A year later, he couldn’t be happier.

I have more space to have my kids to visit. I’m paying less in a mortgage than I was in rent – and it’s a nice neighborhood as well. I’ve enjoyed making this place home. When you pay rent, you are paying for someone else’s future. When you pay a mortgage, you’re paying for your own.”

Early is one of 110 veterans who have participated in ANDP’s Veterans program –either through homeownership or affordable rental opportunities.

The ANDP Veterans Program, supported by The Home Depot Foundation and others is an affordable home purchase program for qualifying Veterans, Active Duty Military and Gold Star Families. The program provides affordable rental options as well as newly renovated homes at affordable prices, paired with down payment assistance of up to $5,000.
